Container Gardening vs Raised Beds | Which is Better?

Container Gardening vs Raised Beds !I’m going to be honest with you, I have a hard time growing plants indoors. It’s not that I don’t want to; it’s just the space is so limited and it always seems like too much work for me.

This year, my husband surprised me with an outdoor container garden kit as a gift and I couldn’t be more excited! This post will compare raised beds vs containers in order to help you decide which one is better for your needs.

If you want to grow something indoors but need the plant’s root system stay contained, this might be your best option.

They may not provide as many nutrients for plants that raised beds can, but they’re the perfect space-saving option for people with limited outdoor space.

– If you’re not sure which type of gardening to go with, it’s best to experiment and find out what works for you. Try planting some seeds in both containers and raised beds so that you can see the benefits of each one firsthand.

dreamscapesgardeningWhat are Container Gardening and Raised Beds?

Container gardening is a type of gardening in which most or all plants grow in containers. The container usually contains soil, but can also be filled with water.  Some people put their plants inside the container to help keep them alive during winter when outdoor conditions are harsh.

This is called cold-frame gardening. Other people may place their plant outside of the pot for it to get plenty of sunlight even if they have limited space such as on an apartment balcony.

For example, many people who live in condos are now doing container gardening because it takes up less room and is easier to maintain than an outdoor garden that needs watering every day.

growing cherokee purple tomatoes in containersRaised Beds: This type of gardening provides better drainage as well as increased air circulation which prevents fungus from growing on damp soil and helps prevent plants from getting root rot.

A raised bed also means more planting options for vegetables like lettuce, kale, spinach or chard without overcrowding your produce with flowers such as marigolds or zinnia

A raised bed garden uses raised beds rather than containers that hold dirt and other materials like wood chips, rocks, straw bales or concrete blocks around fruit trees and grape vines so that you could harvest fresh produce from your backyard year-round.

Container Gardening requires more attention and work from the gardener, but it is a great option for those with limited space or restrictive gardening conditions.

dreamscapesgardeningPotting Mix Vs. Raised Bed Soil

Both potting mix and raised bed soil are well-suited for container gardening, but they have different compositions. Potting mix is comprised mainly of organic matter such as peat moss or coir; it also contains composted bark that’s been screened to remove any large particles.

Raised bed soil typically consists of a mixture of topsoil from the garden site mixed with various nutrients, water retention agents and sometimes sand if desired.

Advantages–

  • The primary advantage to using potting mixture is its ability to retain moisture while still having excellent drainage properties so your plant roots can take up the appropriate amount of nutrients without being overwatered.
  • If you want the best possible option for your plants, then potting mix should be on top of your list. It has great drainage and nutrient retention capabilities which means that it will provide a healthy environment for your plants to grow in.

Disadvantages –

  • With all those desirable characteristics comes an increased expense.
  • The downside is that it’s not cheap at all and if you’re just starting out with gardening, this can put off many people from even getting started.

Advantages – Peat moss is usually a cheaper option than potting mix and it also retains water for long periods of time, which means that it will be able to keep your plants hydrated even if you forget about them for a few days.

Disadvantages – It does not have as much drainage capability as other types of soil or containers do, meaning that there’s more potential for root rot when watering.

Advantages – The advantage is that it’s very cheap and if you want to keep the costs down then this is a great option as well as being lightweight so you don’t need heavy machinery or equipment to move around.

Disadvantages  – It doesn’t have good drainage which means water will stay in contact with plants roots too long leading to root rot. You should be aware of how much sunlight they get because anything under direct sun could dry out quickly.

dreamscapesgardeningPlanting Vegetables in Raised Beds, Containers, In-Ground – Pros and cons

Container-gardeners don’t have to worry about weeds at all. They can easily pull the offending weed out of their container bed, or spray it with a diluted organic herbicide.

Container gardeners also need less watering than in-ground gardens because they are watered from above and their soil is often moistened before planting time with an added layer of compost or mulch.

Although raised beds do require more labor upfront, primarily the digging process that goes into making them, once you fill your raised bed with healthy soil and plant it up–most people agree this method ends up being cheaper over time as there’s no ongoing costs for tools like weeding forks or hoes (though these may be needed occasionally).

Raised beds also do not require as much fertilizer and need less watering than in-ground gardens because they are watered from above and their soil is often moistened before planting time with an added layer of compost or mulch.

dreamscapesgardeningFabric Raised Beds: The Benefits of Growing Vegetables in the Fabric Pots

Fabric pots are also very easy to move in and out of the shade. They can be expanded or contracted for your growing needs, too. For example, if you only want one row on a fabric pot for lettuce but don’t have room on another side, you can fold it up like an accordion so that more space is available next to it.

Fabric raised beds are perfect for smaller spaces where traditional gardens take up lots of lawn area or backyards with old trees or existing landscaping features that may not appreciate new additions.
